Full history → 1942 Swedish paper company Pauliström introduces an early disposable design using cellulose sheets held in place by rubber pants — cotton was unavailable in Sweden during WWII. First commercial attempt at a cellulose-core disposable; establishes the cellulose-plus-barrier architecture still recognisable today.
1946 Marion Donovan creates the "Boater" — a waterproof diaper cover cut from a shower curtain, later made from surplus nylon parachute cloth and fastened with snaps instead of safety pins. Solves leakage without the diaper rash caused by rubber pants; the direct ancestor of the modern backsheet.
1949 The Boater goes on sale at Saks Fifth Avenue's flagship store in New York City. First retail proof that parents will pay a premium for leak protection.
1949-10 Valerie Hunter Gordon is granted a UK patent for "Paddi", a two-part system of a disposable cellulose pad worn inside an adjustable plastic garment; Robinsons of Chesterfield goes into full production in November 1949. First mass-produced two-part disposable system in Europe; Boots UK stocks it across all branches from 1950.
1951 Donovan patents the Boater and sells the rights for USD 1 million. First significant IP monetisation event in the category.
1956 Victor Mills, a chemical engineer at Procter & Gamble, begins developing the modern disposable diaper that will become Pampers. Marks the point where a global FMCG manufacturer commits R&D scale to the category.
